The 1st International Expert Meeting AMuSE was held at the University of Teacher Education in Vienna on September 24 and 25, 2013. The event was dedicated to the topic of Multilingualism in New Teacher Education, and it attracted more than 100 participants from diverse countries. The interactive programme of the event allowed for a lot of audience participation and discussions. On the first day, the members of the project team AMuSE and some guests discussed their work and research on multilingualism at schools in different countries, including Turkey, Poland, Estonia, Sweden, Italy, and Switzerland. The second day started out with two keynote presentations. In these talks, Mikael Luciak from the Department of Education at Vienna University and Barbara Herzog-Punzenberger from BIFIE Salzburg provided two perspectives on multilingualism in Austrian schools. Their engaging presentations were followed by a panel discussion with representatives from pedagogical institutions, academics, teachers, and teacher trainees. In the afternoon, the participants at the meeting split up into ten groups (round tables), and, after internal discussion of a range of questions related to different aspects of multilingualism at schools, the outcomes were presented and discussed further among all participants. The event found an interactive closure with a “market place” consisting of 12 projects and initiatives for the promotion of multilingualism. Participants could stop by the different stands providing information and further opportunities for animated discussions on projects such as a trilingual magazine for children, intercultural education, mother tongue teaching, migration, and others. The contributions to the expert meeting will be made available in the format of an e-portfolio on the AMuSE website (publications) until the end of 2013.
